2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Leaks

Seems like Mercedes-Benz can’t keep their new C-Class under wraps as leaks just keep on appearing on the internet.

Although there has been many leaks of the C-Class, this one seems the most significant as the pictures show its sibling DNA, especially from the S-Class.

The car seems more sculpted and stylish now, the last-gen C-Class became a bit bland 6 years later but this really will spice things up a bit.

The new C-Class is expected to be 100 kilograms lighter than the previous-gen. More aluminum body panels and a Modular RWD (MRA) architecture. With rivals such as the 3-Series boasting more leg room, the new C-Class’s wheel base will probably be stretched by about 8 cm.

Engine choices are plentiful too including a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder turbo with 157 HP (115 kW), a larger 2.0-liter turbo with 186 HP (136 kW) and a 2.2-liter 4-cylinder diesel rated at 170 HP (125 kW). Expect a 5.5-liter Biturbo AMG variant of the C Class to take on the new recently revealed BMW M3 and M4.

Expect the new C-Class to be revealed on Monday.

Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo Revealed

Mercedes-Benz has finally revealed their ‘Vision Gran Turismo’ – a virtual concept designed for the latest Gran Turismo PlayStation game due to release on December 6th 2013.

As good as it looks, you won’t be seeing this car on the road as it is designed to be a virtual racer. It’s not all doom & gloom though because Merc’ have build a 1:1 scale model for research/development purposes.

This front-engined rolling piece of art will virtually feature a rear-wheel-drive arrangement with gullwing doors like the SLS AMG.

A fire-breathing AMG V8  will be pumping out 577 BHP and 590 lb-ft of torque, which is supported by a body that weighs just 3,053 lbs.

All of this immense power will probably need out-of-this-world stopping power, and it does! The Vision GT comes with AMG’s high-performance ceramic composite brakes which can rip your face off if you slam on the brake pedal.

All of which is normal, lots of power, a light body, beautiful design, it’s a supercar recipe that’s lasted decades, however, 8 exhaust pipes sets it apart from other Supercars.

The interior was not shown in the press release, but Merc’ says it comes with an F1-inspired cockpit with red integral sport seats and a display that floats above the steering wheel – how cool is that!

Have your chance to drive the Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo when the game is released on the 6th of December

Driven: Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Edition 507

We get the chance to drive the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG’s last hurrah, and oh boy is it good!

PERFORMANCE

The C63 AMG Edition 507 has incredible performance which makes it stupendously, barbarically and catastrophically fast. Before we get into the main performance figures, just remember that this is the last time we will ever see the mighty M156 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 in a Mercedes-Benz AMG ever again. Sure you can call it a send off, but it’s more like a last chance in its life to sing to the people who enjoyed it the most. It’s sad to see it go, and we’re pretty sure Mercedes-AMG wasn’t to happy to see it through the door either, which is why this M156 in particular is actually quite special. For starters, it shares components such as pistons with the M159 engine, which belongs in the mighty SLS AMG. So, what does all of this actually do? Well, the C63 AMG Edition 507 has – you guessed it – 507 hp and 610 Nm torque. Turn off the ESP, press the AMG button, select Race Start and you can hit naught to 62 mph in just 4.2 seconds, that’s Porsche 911 territory! One of the most surprising things about this car is the suspension setup, it is slightly stiffened but feels no less comfortable to the previous one, which makes it a great continent cruiser.

EXTERIOR

The C63 AMG Edition 507 comes in 3 different forms, coupe, estate and saloon. We had a go in the estate, which was a rare opportunity. The Edition 507 boasts wide wheel arches and a vented bonnet borrowed from the Black Series. It also has DTM inspired light-weight alloys and a subtle bootlid spoiler. This gives it a unique stance on the road, you could easily tell this from a standard C63 AMG.

INTERIOR

The interior has had a slight overhaul, the Edition 507 comes with sport seats and a bunch of new badges to remind you that you’re not in a standard C63 AMG. The Edition 507 also comes with an ‘AMG’ button which sorts out every setting in the car if you’re planning to drive enthusiastically.

VERDICT

The Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG is a well deserved car for the M156 to have it’s last breath of air before AMG roll it off the production line, and the Edition 507 has done it justice.

Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe Spotted in Germany

Now that Mercedes-Benz has got the S63 AMG Saloon out of the way, they can concentrate on their next big thing, the all-new S- Class Coupe. The S-Class Coupe will be released sometime next year, to contend with the likes of Bentley’s Continental and the lack of BMW 8 Series (Come on BMW, choppy chop!).
Even before production, Mercedes-Benz has sent the S Coupe off to AMG, their in-house tuner, to work their usual magic. Yep, you’ve guessed it, it’s the new S63 AMG Coupe! It’ll be powered by the same 5.5 liter twin-turbo V8 which produces 577 hp as the S63 AMG Saloon. Expect the S63 AMG Coupe to have a top speed of around 186 mph and achieve 0-62 mph in around 4 seconds.

Mercedes-Benz Unleashes S63 AMG

Since Mercedes-Benz released the W222 S-Class, it was no surprise that AMG would get their hands on one, and after a not-so-long wait and a bunch of leaks and a teaser video, here it is, fresh out of Affalterbach, the brand-spankin’-new Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG!

The new S63 AMG is no joke, it has mountains of power, an exquisite interior and a beautiful exterior design with added aggression which doesn’t only enhance looks, but performance too.

The big powerful ‘Benz will feature the same 5.5-liter biturbo M157 motor found in most AMG’s today (CLS63, ML63, SL63, E63, G63, GL63 and CL63),  the only difference is, that it will produce 585 horsepower and 900 Nm torque! As ridiculous as those numbers get, we’re pretty sure you can expect an S Model which will push it to well over 600 bhp!

The new S63 AMG will come in 3 different variants, a short-wheel-base, long-wheel-base, and for the first time ever in a S63 AMG, a 4MATIC long-wheel-base. Now that you’ve heard ‘4MATIC’, you must be wondering the 0-60 times, well, the short and long-wheel-base models both do it in 4.4 second, while the 4MATIC on the other had does it in a stupendously fast 4.0 seconds dead! However, we reckon if you push it hard enough, it will hit 3.9, if you keep trying of course.

Displacement: 5461 cc

Output: 430 kW (585 hp) at 5500 rpm

Max. Torque: 900 Nm at 2250-3750 rpm

Kerb Weight: 1970 kg

Acceleration (0-100 km/h): 4.4s

Even though weight isn’t that important when it comes to a big luxury car, the new S65 is still pretty impressive, this time, the short-wheel-base has the edge as weighs 1970 kg whilst the long-wheel-base weighs just 25 kg more at 1995 kg. Nonetheless, the S63 AMG is still lighter than its ‘new’ rival, the Rolls-Royce Ghost’s which weighs 2,470 kg.

On the subject of rivalry, from the way the S-Class has been designed inside and out, it really seems like Mercedes-Benz has pushed the S-Class out of the executive car segment (BMW 7 Series, Audi A8, etc..) to the luxury car segment  (Rolls-Royce Ghost/Phantom, Bentley Mulsanne, etc..). The W221 wasn’t a rival as such but now, the W222 has really pushed those boundaries out of the way.

AMG hasn’t opted for a double-clutch , instead, they went for their traditional AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT gearbox which is also found in most AMG’s that have the M157 motor.

For those who don’t understand what ‘4MATIC’ means, it essentially means ‘all-wheel-drive’. The good news is that this drivetrain is rear-biased where 33 percent goes to the front axle and 67 percent is sent to the rear axle, which of-course means a more pleasurable driving experience.

The latest technology in the new S-Class is the MAGIC BODY CONTROL suspension. This great bit of kit scans the road ahead and adjusts the suspension accordingly to give thus giving the feeling that the bumps in the road have been ironed out.

Moving on to the sexy exterior (got a little biased there), the S63 AMG features some great new enhancements. First of all, the normal S-Class’s bumper has been ditched in favour of a much more aerodynamic bumper as well as a splitter which infact looks very cool indeed! The rear is very AMG-like, with a nice diffuser and quad-square exhaust pipes which of course have AMG logo’s embedded onto them.

You might of also noticed the new exclusive AMG 19-inch lightweight alloys which are held by 255/45 tyres at the front and 285/40 at the back.

The interior, well, have a look yourself. Isn’t it one of the most exquisite places to be?

The new Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG will make its debut at Frankfurt Auto Show this September and will go on sale soon after at a price of around £120,000.

Achtung! S63 AMG Teased

Following the all-new W222 Mercedes-Benz S-Class’s reveal, it is no surprise it’ll be getting some AMG treatment, and finally, we have the first official teaser.

The W222 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG will feature the same M157 motor found in most modern AMG’s today. The output is not yet known but it is expected to produce around 557 hp and around 590 lb-ft torque on a rear-wheel-drive platform. The new S63 AMG is also rumoured to be a part of the S trim found in the E63 AMG S and the CLS63 AMG S, this will evidently push the horsepower figure up to around 585 hp.

Expect a ridiculously powerful S65 AMG variant to join the AMG family too!

Spied: Mercedes SLC?

mercedes-slc-amg

These aren’t really spyshots. No really, Mercedes has put these pics online themselves. Without any further information or whatsoever. Many say this the new ‘baby SLS’ called the ‘SLC’. From the pics however, the dimensions are fairly SLS-ish. Or should Jaguar wet their pants for early F-type competition in the form of an SLC? What’s Benz up to now? And where is BMW?

A ‘Super Leicht’ Edition

If it is indeed the SLC, it’ll have to be quite a niche. Sitting in between all sorts of roadster convertibles like the SLK and SL model range. Most likely to also incorporate the aluminium spaceframe from the SLS and have the same front-engined rear-wheel-drive layout.

[nggallery id=36]

Baby body = Baby price, right?

Compared to its daddy counterpart’s £170,000 price tag, the SLC will likely start around a Porsche 911 battling figure of around £85,000 which isn’t exactly ‘baby’ but still less than half of what the SLS AMG costs. Meaning Mercedes-Benz is likely to pull the same trick Jaguar did with the F-type.

What does it lose?

Unfortunately, the SLS AMG’s iconic gullwing doors won’t appear on the SLC, nor will its M156 6.2-litre naturally-aspirated V8.

Which engine options will be available?

A variety of brand-new engines will appear such as a new 4.0-litre turbo V8 that produces around 480bhp and will allegedly be in the next-gen C63 AMG. However, performance figures won’t halt there, a more powerful model using the same engine will be pushed to around 580bhp, while a planned turbo 3.0-litre V8 engine with around 350bhp will probably be more convenient. Don’t hold your breath there, a Black Series version will soon follow. Crazy right? Just leaves you to wonder, where is BMW?

BMW? We want a new Z8. Immediately.

*Update, this new pic shows off the dimensions of the car much better.

Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG Edition 1

A couple of months after revealing the all-new 2014 Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG Edition 1, Mercedes-Benz has gone that one-step ahead by giving the CLA45 AMG some Edition 1 treatment too.

In 2013, Mercedes-Benz debuted the Edition 1 for the CLA-Class, but for the 45 AMG, the Edition 1 treatment adds a whole new level of aggression which makes the CLA45 to look that whole lot meaner.

[nggallery id=44]

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG Edition 1 incorporates many exterior and interior options found on the A45 AMG Edition 1, which includes: a gloss black rear lip spoiler, matte-black 19-inch alloy wheels and graphite grey side strips as well as an abundance of red accents on the car including the front grille, mirrors, wheels and brake calipers.

Driven: Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG

GL 63 AMG

Since 2006, the GL-Class has been Mercedes-Benz’s definitive answer to the Range Rover Vogue, but its styling and design was quickly outdated after Mercedes-Benz started to update their designs in 2010. Also for this X164 model, we didn’t see an AMG counterpart, which meant the M156 AMG 6.2L motor never made an appearance, which is a shame seeing as the M156 engine is more-or-less a thing of the past now and it doesn’t seem we’ll be seeing a N/A AMG Engine in the future either!

Well now after 7 years, they have absolutely re-engineered and designed the new X166 Second Generation GL from top to bottom. The upside: it looks much bigger, the interior quality has been updated to a more luxurious standard, and the exterior design is finally very eye catching indeed.

Hmm, so what about AMG? Well, we are pleased to report that there is finally a GL63 AMG, and guess what? We’ve driven it! Let’s break it down for you:

Performance

PERFORMANCE

As with most AMG’s today, the GL63 AMG features AMG’s M157 5.5L twin-turbocharged motor which produces 557 bhp and a massive 760Nm torque. With all this power, it catapults the GL63 to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds. For a car this big and heavy, can you imagine what that must feel like? Push hard enough and it’ll hit its limited top speed of 155 mph in no time what so ever. Even at the limiter, this car still wants to go faster!

So what sort of transmission must cope with all the beastly power that lurks beneath the hood of the GL63? Well, no other but the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC, which if anything else would not of been good enough. The transmission is absolutely snappy in its gear changes, it makes a great sound on the upshifts too!

[nggallery id=39]

There were three settings: ‘Comfort’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Sport Plus’, we tended to leave it in Sport for the best combination of power and comfort. However, when you just want to haul along, in Comfort it feels like an ordinary GL350.

Although the car is quite heavy, it does handle particularly well around corners for its size, but then again, it’s not a car to rip around the Nurburgring and thrash some lap times, because this car is a City destroyer, this car will rip through the city at lightning fast speeds and do the same off-road. Yes, you guessed it, unlike the ML63 AMG, this AMG model can handle quite some tough terrain!

Exterior

EXTERIOR

The exterior. Hmm, there’s only one thing to say about it! It’s absolutely humongous, you’ll feel like an ant next to this car, but it isn’t necessarily a bad thing, from inside it feels like an ML, but from the outside, this thing makes double-decker buses feel like they aren’t welcome. Okay, maybe it’s not THAT big but it is still a pretty huge car, especially compared to something like a Range Rover Vogue, BMW X5, Audi Q7. This is just one of the few cars in the world that will give you that superior presence on the road.

In terms of design, the new GL is a huge step up from its predecessor. The previous model was a quite bland and boring, it didn’t really give you a reason to turn your head, but its successor is a whole new story.

A chunkier front grille, diffuser and a more sportier bumper gives the GL63 credentials its rivals just can’t handle. With a chunkier grille, comes a chunkier badge which lets everyone on the road know you mean business. The side of the GL63 features 2 lines, one going across the side and the other just highlighting over the rear wheel arch. These lines give the GL63  a wider and muscly stance, but the rear wheel arch line in general really makes the GL63 look like it’s on steroids.

[nggallery id=40]

The headlights and taillights are great on the road, and in terms of safety, probably one of the safest lighting systems around. On a more cosmetic approach, the lights are probably one of the greatest things about this car, in day-light, the LED’s are eye-catching and at night time, you will anticipate this car coming in the distance just to see what it is.

Those huge 21″ AMG rims finish off the job, adding the last piece of the jigsaw to create a good looking SUV.

Interior

INTERIOR

The interior has undergone a total overhaul, it is a much better place to be than its predecessor. The new Designo range of leathers feel great on the skin, the colours are rich and you won’t be able to find one part of the car where Mercedes-Benz have tried to cut cost because frankly, they haven’t. It feels very high-end inside, probably not as luxurious as a Range Rover, but then again the Range Rover is just trying too hard to be a Bentley. The Mercedes GL however, is very focused. There’s not much to tell you spent the extra premium to go for the GL63 but it still feels quite special.

At night time the cabin comes alive, ambient lighting cocoons the whole cabin with luminous light which somehow makes you feel relaxed. On a long journey, you will not be disappointed.

[nggallery id=41]

Mercedes-Benz are really spot on with their audience, and with the GL, it’s no exception. The GL has 7-seats that can electronically fold making it more practical than ever. Another surprising this is when you have all the seats up, there’s still decent boot space in the rear.

A slight let-down is that this AMG model doesn’t feature the same sort of seats the E63 AMG, the whole feeling of the lumbar’s moving in to squeeze you round a bend makes you more comfortable to throw it around a corner.

GL63_Verdict

VERDICT

The GL63 is a great car, even though its expensive price tag of £90K lets it down and as tested the one we drove was £112K. The upshot is that for the money, you’re buying a car that can perform, be a comfortable cruiser, a practical car and a ‘move over, slow driver’ car when you want it to. One of the best SUV’s around,  we enjoyed our time with it.

Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG – 4.5/5.
